Summer is the best time to embrace the process. While each of us have goals and objectives on the horizon, that horizon is still a touch too far to be our main focus so now we turn the focus inward. It’s time to build the base both in mileage and mindset.
Taking some time to focus on building a physical and mental base allows us to be process oriented. It’s easy to get caught up in comparison in running. We compare times, mileage, vert, or whatever the metric du jour may be. That can certainly be productive. Chasing can give you motivation and targets to shoot for but it’s a razor thin line. Every once in awhile we need to remind ourselves that everything in running is relative.
Fast is relative. Far is relative. Hard and easy are relative. When we allow ourselves to get caught up in comparison we tent to focus too much on results. However, if we can turn our focus to the process then the results will follow. This mindset shift allows us to be honest about our preparation. Let’s be totally honest, we’ve all had days in which our expectations outweighed our preparation. That’s a recipe to get yourself into a cycle of frustration and disappointment. It’s also why the summer is the perfect time to take a step back and work on building your physical and mental foundation.
All that being said, it’s still important to have goals. More on that next time.
